The background to this was originally must simpler and filled mostly with mist, but somehow it became a little more overbearing than initially planned. This is also the first time I didn't start with a pencil drawing before pulling it into Photoshop -- I dove straight into painting and started with a digital color sketch instead.

I don't think your background is overbearing at all. The depth the background adds to the picture is part of why I find this piece to be worthwhile and lovely. You could almost feel like you're there...except, for me, I don't know why the lady is so barely clothed on what looks like a cold day and is dipping her dress into the water for good measure! It is still a beautiful shot though, and I do really like the dress and her pleasant expression.
