I'm starting to compile graphics for an eventual Lackadaisy web site and I had a grand old time painting this one. The cats and car were drawn in pencil first and scanned, the rest painted directly in Photoshop. I've never actually painted a car before, so I feel I'm expanding my boundaries some. I lack experience at anything mechanical having stuck so strictly to painting organic subject matter for so long, but 's vehicular concept artwork definitely served as an inspiration (he's a very talented coworker of mine) and motivation to give it a try. The car is based on the 1929 Ford Model A "Fordor."
I picked St. Louis as a setting because, though it was no Chicago, it has a pretty interesting history through the first few decades of the 20th century...and, well, it's where I live. Photos of the St. Louis skyline prior to the construction of the Arch have been very difficult to come by, unfortunately. If anyone knows of any resources, it'd be very much appreciated. The building on the far right is a silhouette of the old Lemp Brewery. The brewery did not survive the Prohibition era and the Lemp family has a rather dramatic and tragic history as a result, but the building is still standing today.
i would so love to these guys as like.... a children's story book.... made entirely not for children... but i think that sort of book would be awesome for them.... the way you paint them is gorgeous and i can totally see the era they represent in them... i can't wait to see more of these guys and learn more of their story!

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
